How to Create Better Brand Photography for Your Business

Whether you’re just starting out or it’s been a while since you started our business and it needs a refresh, brand photography will help your business stand out online (and in person!). Creating great photos for your business might sound easy, but when it comes to planning and executing photoshoots and brand photography sessions, it can be a challenge. It’s not only one more thing on your to-do list, but it’s also time-consuming and if you’re not used to the process it can be overwhelming. If you’re ready to step up the photography for your business and have images that sell and tell, keep reading.

Create Lived in Scenes

Lived in scenes are one of my favorite types of shots to get for brands. They help entice the viewer to purchase a product, to make a reservation, to inquire about services. These types of scenes should be ones your target audience can (and wants to!) jump into and include normal parts of life - hands, a (strategically) misplaced piece of food, and props that would actually be used.

Tips for Creating Lived-In Scenes:

  • Interact with the scene. Pick up and place the items of the scene down naturally, sometimes over and over again until you get the perfect placement. For example, in the shots above, the lemon slices appear on the cutting board like they would if you were organically cutting a lemon in your kitchen.

  • Incorporate props that make sense. If you’re a designer, utilize paint and fabrics swatches, a drawing pad, and pens and pencils. If you’re a restaurant, include silverware, beverages, and garnishing.

Adjust Your Placement & Editing

Have brand photography and feel like it doesn’t quite capture your brand how you want it to? My biggest tip is to experiment with different angles and placement of products in the scene and adjusting your body (if you’re in the photo!). Sometimes all it takes is having a variety of different images to compare to figure out exactly what look you’re going for!

How to Experiment with Your Images:

  • Whether it’s twisting garnish, moving your body, picking up a spoon, or swinging a bag, adding movement can completely change how the image looks. Don’t feel like you need to be perfectly still for the duration of your photoshoot!

  • We often think that a flat-lay or photo taken at a 90-degree angle is going to look the best, but that’s not always the case! Play around with the angles you’re shooting at, especially when it comes to capturing food, beverages, and products.

  • Do you always opt for lighter images because it’s just easy but actually prefer a moodier photo? Experiment with your editing! It might take some time to achieve exactly what you’re looking for but once you get there, you won't be disappointed! If you’re struggling to achieve the edit you’re hoping for, give our Lightroom presets a try!

Be Consistent

Whether you’re tackling your brand photography yourself or are working with a photographer, it’s crucial to be consistent with the look and feel of your brand photography. While it’s not crucial to have the same colors and items in all of your photos, it is important to have consistent editing. If some of your photos are dark and moody, while others are light and airy, your audience can get confused with your branding! Are you ready to start creating better brand photography for your business?
